04/10/2010 - Washington, DC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jamal Crawford scored a team-high 28 points off the bench, as the Atlanta Hawks found success on the road with a 105-95 victory over the Washington Wizards.
Joe Johnson added 20 points for the Hawks, who had dropped six consecutive road contests. But coming off Friday's home win over Toronto, the Hawks used a fourth-quarter run to take control and facilitate the victory, which improved their playoff standing.
Atlanta entered the contest holding the third spot in the Eastern Conference, a game ahead of Boston. The Celtics play at Milwaukee on Saturday, and should they lose, the Hawks will secure the third seed, as they would be two games up with two to play. Atlanta holds the tiebreaker over Boston by virtue of sweeping the season series.
Andray Blatche had 24 points, nine rebounds and seven assists to lead the Wizards, who were coming off Friday's win at Boston. Nick Young added 23 points, 19 of which came in the first half.
The contest was close the entire way, as the lead changed hands 15 times and hovered around one or two possessions. It was tied just over two minutes into the fourth quarter before Atlanta went on the game's first sustained run, an 11-0 burst.
Crawford opened it with a three, and after a Young turnover, Al Horford sank two free throws. A Blatche miss and turnover on the Wizards' next touch gave the ball back to the Hawks, and after Maurice Evans air-balled a three, he sank a jumper for a 90-83 margin -- then Atlanta's largest lead of the game.
Another Wizards miss led to a Johnson jumper from the foul line, and he drove for a layup on Atlanta's next possession to make it 94-83 with 5:56 left.
The whole run lasted a little under four minutes but essentially decided the game. While Washington regained some of its scoring touch, the Hawks kept making shots. With 2:42 left, Crawford had a four-point play for a 103-90 edge, allowing Atlanta to hold on for the victory.
A back-and-forth first quarter ended with a Young three-pointer that evened the game at 30. Young had 12 points in the opening frame.
Both teams shot well in the first half: Washington made 55 percent of its shots, and Atlanta sank 53.7 percent. Neither team led by more than six, and Horford's dunk in the final minute put the Hawks up 52-50 at the break.
Washington used a nine-point run early in the third to gain a 59-54 edge, and played in front for most of the quarter. However, Crawford ended the frame with a three and a jumper to make it a 78-78 contest moving to the fourth.
Game Notes
Atlanta has won nine in a row against the Wizards and swept the four-game season series for the second straight year...Josh Smith had 10 points and eight assists for the Hawks, while Horford finished with 10 boards and eight points...Mike Miller had 16 points for the Wizards, while Shaun Livingston added 15 points and seven assists.

Work left to do: Villanova, Syracuse, DePaul, West Virginia, Providence
Notre Dame and Louisville appear to have done enough to make the move, so we'll make them locks. The Cardinals, despite a modest RPI, are trending way up and have clinched at least a tie for third in the Big East, which should be more than enough with their pair of big road wins. Villanova got back to .500 and gets back to more solid footing. Syracuse got a very important road win and crippled a fellow contender in the process. West Virginia's fate could be in its hands Tuesday at Pitt.
Work left to do:
Villanova [18-9 (7-7), RPI: 21, SOS: 5] Pounded Rutgers to get back to .500. If Cats can get their last two (at UConn, vs. Syracuse), that should be enough with strong computer numbers and a host of wins away from The Pavilion. The Cats have beaten Texas and swept the Big 5 (never easy in Philly), but have a couple of losses to bubble teams (Xavier, Drexel), too. I still think they'll be OK, possibly even at 8-8.
Syracuse [20-8 (9-5), RPI: 53, SOS: 62] History says 10 wins will be plenty, but it might be hard for the Orange to get that last one with a final two vs. G'town, which is trying to win the league title, and at Villanova, which will be desperate for a W. The relative lack of nonconference heft and the weak computer numbers are still concerns, but the Orange have won four in a row and got a very, very big win at Providence on Saturday.
DePaul [16-12 (8-7), RPI: 54, SOS: 18] Beat Cincy and should get past South Florida to get to 9-7, but then what? They have beaten Kansas and Cal (right after the DeVon Hardin injury) earlier this season, but also have lost to Bradley and Purdue, among others. They'll likely need a couple of BE tourney wins, too, but we'll see ...
West Virginia [19-7 (8-6), RPI: 58, SOS: 125] The game at Pitt on Tuesday night could decide the Mountaineers' fate (barring a deep tournament run). They can still get to 9-7 in the Big East without it by beating Cincinnati, but the nine wins would be against UConn, Villanova, St. John's, South Florida, DePaul, Rutgers, Seton Hall twice and the Bearcats. Beating bubble foes is fine, but where's the beef? Outside of beating PG-less UCLA in nonconference play (still a top quality win), there's not a lot to fall back on (besides maybe NC State). WVU vs. Syracuse would be an interesting debate, as the teams don't play in the Big East regular season. WVU has the best win, but Cuse has played the much better schedule.
Providence [17-10 (7-7), RPI: 70, SOS: 33] The Friars likely saw their at-large hopes die at home in the four-point loss to Syracuse, barring an unexpected run to the Big East semis or more. The RPI, bad already, won't be helped by playing St. John's and South Florida in the final two league games.
